I fitted a "plug in " towing loom on my Fiesta (1.6 tdci Titanium) when I fitted the towbar over 12 months ago. The fog light on the car then ceased to work and despite checking connections which I can access, it still does not. Bulb is OK. I believe that the first MOT will fail on this. As anyone else had a similar problem?

Towbar wiring on modern vehicles is sometimes designed to be 'smart' ie recognise when a trailer is connected & act accordingly, ie in this case disable rear fog on car when towing. To work correctly it needs a software update which might be the case here. Usually can only be done at main dealer for about £40.
rang my friend who does MOT checks and he said although 13 pin connections were being done now he has been told that the 7 pin check will follow shortly,maybe a few weeks.

My dad had his 7pin socket tested for his MOT 2 weeks ago. & I was told in December, when I had my MOT, that it would be tested in Jan. He never said there was any distinction between 7 & 13 pin sockets.
As for the OP, check your plug socket. Most modern trailer lighting sockets have a set of terminals which disable the rear fog light whilst towing (as it reflects off the caravan & can dazzle/disturb the driver). It's just possible your socket has been connected incorrectly or the terminals may have some muck/grit in them.
Is it a 7 pin socket or the newer 13pin socket?
Did the socket come pre-wired or was it just the loom?
Check to see if the socket pin for the rear fog light has any power at it with the switch on, as this could well answer your question.
Great response, many thanks to all. Tentz , once again good advice and Matt, I will check that the pre-wired socket is correctly set up (7 pin). I have a much better idea what to look for now. Got a feeling it could need the software updating, it's a 2009 model with all singing/dancing reactive wiring ,I believe. Cheers !
