Some car battery chargers have too higher amp input which in turn could buckle the plates but some will disagree with this. The facts are that a car battery is designed differently to a leisure battery so the charge input has to be reduced to a trickle charge. There are different types of chargers available and some car chargers have a trickle charge facility which should be fine. However I use a smart charger which charges in 4 stages which I was advised was the best sort to use but they can range in price. It depends if he has his caravan in storage or not. My caravan is in storage and not having the facilities to charge the leisure battery on the caravan I have to remove it, bring it home and charge it via the smart charger as previously mentioned.
If you want to use your car battery charger for a long period of time rather than buy a special, all you need to do is connect a 12v bulb accross the terminals. This will keep the battery cycling, and prevent overcharging.

Argos do a couple of chargers that are also suitable for leisure batteries, I think they start at around £30. We got ours from there to use on the car / caravan battery and it has been fine. I just switch it on trickle charge mode once a month over winter and this keeps the battery topped up fine in the garage!
