We have a old caravan which has never been fitted with a Zig/charging system. It is presently fitted with an elderly110 amp which we suspect will have popped off this mortal coil over winter.
Want to replace battery with an transformer. Used to have a French folder years ago and this had one fitted, and if you always on hook up, why bother with a battery?
Anyone one done this? Got any reccomendations to source transformer?
Thanks for any help.

what is the model number on your Zig unit, you may find that is powerful enough to act as a power supply without a battery, all you would need to do is isolate the battery terminals (read plastic bag and tape) to stop them shorting.

You need something like this Connect up to your mains supply & you have a 12v feed to your lights & tap, etc, it would also charge leisure battery if fitted. I'm guessing what you have at the moment is mains supply with leisure battery that is charged only from car while towing?

Just fit one of these :- http://www.amperorassociates.co.uk/c-battery_chargers/BatteryC-3_18A.html
Switch it into float mode and it will sit there all day giving you 13.8v upto 18A.
Great for the price, I had to replace mine this week and this is amazing value for money compared to the rest out there.
It may even recover your battery if left as a 3 stage charger.

The item I linked to is what you require. It is a 12v transformer/charger. It can be used with or without battery. To use without a battery installed, fix into your caravan, connect up to your mains ehu unit & connect 12v supply to 12v equipment in you caravan. You need to fit an inline fuse around 15amp on 12v output close to unit to prevent overload & the output of the unit is 12.5amps. Cheaper transformers will not have sufficient output for caravan use.

Personally I wouldn't like to rely on EHU alone, as they can often trip out when you least expect it, leaving you without lights or pump etc. But perhaps that's just me.
However, if you are sure you don't want a battery, I would go with mre15's suggestion. The more amps you have available the better, as you will get less voltage fluctuation if you use several things at once.------------- Best Regards,
Colin

A few years back I was doing something similar, and bought a power supply unit for CB radio homebase. It powered up a coolbox and lights fine.
I suspect the solutions above are more elegant!

I would always fit a battery. Even if its a small one.
It will even out any surges that may happen and give you backup if the mains trips out.
