I use wet and dry paper to remove any surface rust then use Brasso metal polish with an old cloth just to remove any remaining dust particles.

Ours is kept greased under a plastic cap when not in use, so only a wipe over needed occasionally, never gets rusty.

Depends what you are trying to get of and why. Do you have an alko ball & hitch? if so it needs to be clean & grease free - just use "wet or dry" abrasive paper and wipe it with a clean dry cloth.

i have a alko hitch on my van but a non alko tow ball does this mean i have to make sure the towball is grease free ??? (it has a towball cover when not in use .

You need a long necked towball for an Alko hitch. Its very dangerous to use a standard towball!

Alko stabilisers need a paint free, grease free, clean, dry towball.

ok ,my towball is a swaneck type and i have not had anyproblems with clearance of the hitch but will double check at the weekend.

Wet or dry paper gets it off easily then wipe off the dust with a dry cloth.
