Milton contains chlorine and chlorine corrodes aluminium. Lots of aluminium in caravan water systems etc (and everywhere else!).

That's enough to put me off it.

my bailey hand book says use milton or another cleaner for the water.

What I can't understand is why any-one would use an alternative and doubtful product when the purpose made one is readily available in any caravan shop.

Personally, I only flush the system through each season and use Puriclean on the odd occassion and have never had black bits or any noxious bug to my knowledge.
