The Zig X2 battery charger in my'94 Buccaneer went up in a blinding blue flash when I turned on the electrics after the winter lay up.. I have noticed that there is a replacement available on the market but it is a Zig X70. Does the wiring match? I am assuming (dangerous!)that there is only a 240 v in and 12v out. Is this too simplistic to hope for? Any words of wisdom appreciated.
Thanks for that..That sounds a better deal As far as you know is the wiring just a straight forward 240v in and two wires out for 12 v..You are dealing with a muppet here!
As a matter of interest a contact in the electrical world tells me that the Zig could have failed because of a spider deciding to over winter in there! Well he is awake now!!
You have to look at the output of your old one first as the output that Gary..arc systems suggested is 18amps.I did a little bit of research on this last month as i needed one and the guy from amperor said that this one would melt the wiring in my van if it wasnt suited for 18v and could i send him a piece of my wiring just to make sure.
A bit worried about this i declined his offer but ended up with this which states is fitted by most caravan makers.also, this shop was the cheapest on the web.its 10amps....plug in and connect the two wires, Click
I'm sorry Jeff but good luck with that, if nothings changed it was originally designed as a 6A, then over run at 10A and Bailey use to fit a 12A! version but that would not last two minutes!
The good news was/is you can turn them down to make them last!
The main draw on power is from the battery, if this is suitably wired direct then you should not have a problem.
Moreover, I've fitted a dozen or more into Plug in Systems various PMSx without issues, only the PMS2000 I'm led to believe needing a slight wiring upgrade to the volt meter!
So what exactly is the control panel in your van that your ZIG uses?
The Apmeror has indeed a simple 240v cable in and one pair of 12v connections out.
The ZIG has two pairs out but each is two connections from one source, if then your zig is using all four 12v wire connections then all you need to do is join each pair together into two single connections
I know you must know more about these things than i gary but,i was only going by what the man at the factory told me that 18v would burn out the system. The model you posted was the one i was going to get but was advised not to.
I'm not arguing with that point, wiring being capable is very important, not only because it may overheat, but also that you don't loose efficiency through voltage drop in under rated cabling.
On that score then it depends on what the 18A charger is replacing, don't know what you had but in this case a 12A Zig X7 so more likely to be adequate than not.
In general and certainly since the early 90's battery cable should be 25A+, especially when, as often is, the battery is fused at 25A, either at the battery or internally hidden within the control panel.
It's also worth saying, although it's capable of 18A in this case and unlike the 'dumb' X7 and the one in the picture, this one is fully 'Smart' so only going to use that maximum in a restricted way should the battery be flat or faulty, in the case of flat, only for a limited time, the rest of the time it will be just a few amps, ticking over.
Only if the battery is faulty might it use high amps for a prolonged period but more likely to detect a fault and switch off, if not then ultimately the fuse is there to protect the wiring
Thanks to all for the advice and words of wisdom! I have just purchased a unit from Amperor assosiates. It is there 18amp 3 way charger and at a cost of £69.95 it is about half the price of the ZIG 70. I will be fitting it around Easter as I dont have time due to work until then. I wll post the results!
Fingers crossed!
