Hiya, Am totally new to caravanning and having been away for the first time two days ago have a question.... My van seemed to be using loads of water. I was filling my water carrier (roller type) 3 times a day. Now I know initially the hot water tank has to be filled so that would use an initial amount, but even day three and it was always empty. I searched for leaks but couldn't spot any but am gonna put it on some dry standing concrete now I'm back home and check. But what did worry me was that my waste carrier was also filling up quickly. Is there some kind of overflow in caravans that could be the reason my water carrier is emptying and filling the waste so quickly? I have a Sterling, Europa 1994 model.
How large is your water container? I use a 40L aquaroll and it needs filling daily and that's just for drinking, cooking and hand washing as we always use onsite showers.
I don't drink tea so the drinking water is just the wife and kids drinks.
It's amazing how much you use especially if you're new to caravanning.
Hi, Thanks for your quick reply. Well it's a 40 Litre one. We too used the sites showering facilities and purely only used the van water for washing up.
Jayc is right.
I have a 50 litre and a 40 litre on standby.
We used to use loads but we have learnt to use sparingly, wash up at site facilities and shower on site ect.
That way we can make 50 litres last weekend.
I don't even wash up in the van anymore as it uses so much water. I just pile it all in a big bowl and walk it to the sites facilities.
Is your waste pretty much full when the water container is empty? Most waste containers hold 50L so if it's pretty much full then you don't have a leak. The only way the waste can fill is from a running tap.
Might make you think about how much water you waste at home?
Thanks to you both... Yes it seems to be full when the other is empty, which is why I thought it wasn't a leak but some kind of overflow. I guess in my head I worked out 40 Litres would go quite a way with just washing up. I'll still do the concrete standing test just incase I have missed a leak. Plus that way I can monitor exactly how much water comes out compared to what goes in.
Get someone to do a quick check on where the whale pump connects to the van while you run the tap. We found we were using lots of water but then while OH was running tap, I went outside for something. Found out that whenever pump was working, water was also coming from that seal. Quick and easy to fix, the O ring had split so the seal wasn't great. Quick change and all was well
Some people can use up about 15 litres of water washing a lettuce (no names no GBH) - especially if they don't have to fetch the fresh water and haul away the waste.
And leave the tap running the whole the time they're brushing their teeth.

Slow to respond to this question but...

Now that sounds like someone hitting the nail firmly on the head!
