As I am rebuilding all units wasnt sure if it was cheaper and easier to fit a small portable cabinet gas heater into one of these? Looking for the simplest and cheapest approach?

No! you need a heater with no external flame (inside the caravan) as it could lead to carbon monoxide poisoning.
