Our new towbar blows its fuse when we switch the head lights on, this happened in june and we called the breakdown out on site he and tested the towbar with his separate towing light panel and it kept doing exactly the same thing, he seems to think it was a couple of wires touching where the fuses are and we drove 5 hours home with everything on and working ok, last week we set off again and 10 mins later fuses blown I went through 5 x 15 amp fuses and 1 x 20amp then put another 20 amp in turned the lights off and it didn’t blow and we got there and back with no problems we daren’t turn the lights on, the towbar company is coming out next week and he has already said its the caravan but im not too sure and ideas?
thanks
mark

You mean its blowing the cars headlight fuse (15 amps)?

Is the wiring and switch OK to up the fuse to 20 amps? If not get it out and use a 15amp one.

Are the caravans lights working properly?

Do you test the lights with the hazards and indicators on at the same time?

I switch the headlights on. Check all caravan lights. Then left indicator then right. making sure the sidelights dont flash with the indicators and that the buzzer is working.

Then i get someone to put their foot on the brake whilst indicating left and right and then with the lights on, Brakes on and the hazards on.

You should not see the brake and sidelights flash or dim.

It's the set of fuses in the boot, caravan lights all work When we test on the drive it's all ok until after about 5 mins of towing that's when the boot fuses kept blowing, now my old my golf they plugged the fuses in spare slots on the main fuse box in the dash but now in the Astra there in the boot there's no dipping of lights as when I brought the caravan last year I cleaned all the earths and put new bulbs in

Further developments I've tested again with a 15 amp and it blew straight away once I switched the lights on, so put the 20 amp in switched the head lights on and one side of all the lights are very dim any ideas

Puzzles me why people use photobucket. have you seen all the junk its doing in the background?

Anyway. I would check the current drawn on all those wires. Some look like they have got hot.

Some look like they have had scotchloks on them?
