What is the difference between 221 and 512.. is one setting and one not, which is best of using as adhesive and sealant is it the 512.
Trying to keep costs down so i was thinking of reusing the window seals and just putting new mastic on them..its a coc so no point spending loads, just wanted to make sure its not going to leak for a while. any problems doing this.
i think new seals have a mastic like tape pre stuck to them.. it stays in place and sticks the seal to the van sides.. if you can clean the old seals up and use the same kind of tape it should work.. i would not like to use squeeze in sealant..
With regard to revealing windows, I did all of mine this year on my 24 year old Swift Conqueror.
I reused the rubber trim and fittings, simply cleaned off the old 'dry' mastic and replaced with fresh mastic on a roll.
I used the 32mm mastic, it's a fairly easy job, just a bit fiddly when fitting back the rubber trim in the corners of the windows.
Using a broom handle to prop the window wide open! Unscrew the fittings on the frame (marking lightly with a pencil on the wallboard where they should go back for guidance when refitting.
Set to work removing the 1001 staples from the rubber trim (Stanley knife and little hooked pliers helped with this) and un-peel the rubber trim.
Scrape off the old mastic with a blunt butter knife, then give it a good wipe, and also hoover off the dry stuff round the window frame.
Roll out the mastic trim around the frame, ensuring it overlaps inside and out, with slightly more on the outer side of the frame, only then peeling off the paper backing (experience of mastic sticking to itself!)
When refitting the rubber trim, bend it inside out so as you roll it onto the frame you can control fitting it, although this is the fiddly bit when fitting it into the corners.
You may find that when it's all replaced, you have some overlap on the rubber trim (due to the 'thicker' fresh mastic replacing the worn out thinner or crumbly old mastic) I just trimmed this.
When screwing back in the fittings onto the rubber, it was sometimes easier to screw in one, then close the window and fasten and adjust the other fittings (again experience of screwing them all in and not being able to fasten the window on the second catch!)
To answer your question, there is little different between Sikaflex 512 & 221, they are both permanent setting polyurethane adheasive/sealant. For a coc you are only doing the job once so either will do the job. If you google 'polyurethane adhesive/sealant' you will find other brands equally as good a Sikaflex for half the price.
I took all the rotten timbers out and replaced them in the bathroom, then put plastic cladding over, is its water tight now.. used the 512 for that job, now when i pull the grab handle at the back, its a lot more solid and not bouncy.
not got round to doing the windows or trims yet, going to have a few trips away, just had my first this weekend.. could do with a little bit more room tbh.. so if thats the case and i end up selling this one, i'd rather keep the mastic roll for the next one
