After a few years sabbatical from the caravan world we've just bought a well used but solid a Abbey 416 GTS. However the interior wood effect on the edges of the units, cupboard etc is quite damaged in places. Before I bought it I thought a bit of varnish and stain would fix it but discovered that its wood effect paint on MDF or plastic edging :( Any suggestions or pointers greatly appreciated.
I found two approaches depending on what the state the plastic coating is in.
Where the plastic coating is peeling but mostly intact it can be glued back with exterior wood glue or similar.
Where the plastic coating is badly disintegrating it can be removed with gentle use of hot air gun and then the plywood underneath cleaned up and painted or finished with danish oil or similar.
Thanks to you both for your replies. On the Abbey it's not a laminate but a wood effect paint / coating so after looking through here and other fora I think my only option will be to repaint the van in a yet to be decided colour scheme. Looking at using a bathroom grade satin on the walls and a melamine type paint for work tops etc.
Anyone here got any "war stories" on this that could help me make sure I do a good job that will last without peeling / cracking?
