Hi Camcroft,

Thanks for that , I am sure someone will find it useful.

I already have Sikaflex 221 and 512 theyre good as you say.
I also have Butyl mastic on a roll and different adhesives sush as Evostik Serious Stuff. GRABit Mr Tolleys Creaping Crack Cure , Mr Stcky Spray adshesive,   Dow Corning ( really good ) . Bondrite , etc etc etc.
I am not short on products.

I want to know what the mastic is that is pre-laid into NEW window rubbers. Who manufactures it and what they call it , be it product code / model or whatever.

Anyone ?

the way i see it the tape stuff is stuck to the rubber which when fitted sticks to the said of the van.. it acts like an adhesive as well as a sealer.. it stays in pace and dosnt ooze out like the more runny stuff in a tube does..

i havnt a clue as regards who makes what or the part numbers.. i did have a leaking front window rubber which over time had caused some rot damage in the van.. the rubber had come unbonded from the van.. it was at an angle.. tons of water running down the front of the van pretty much when straight in and luckily straight out again into the gas locker and away as opposed to into the van and staying there..

i did reach the conclusion that new rubbers need to be the pre fitted tape type as opposed to squirting in runny "sealant" afterwards..

i sealed my leaky one with some very sticky clear water proof tape which i rant down the full length of the leaky window rubber.. its all hidden unless i open the window which i never need to..

all attempts at trying to "glue" the loose rubber to the side of the van failed.. i decided that a new rubber with the pre-stuck on sealing tape was the only and proper way of fitting window rubbers..

i dont think sealant in a gun is ever used for the job which if i am right means there will not be the answer to your question that you are looking for..

there are youtube videos of window rubbers being fitted.. rubbers with the pre-applied tape type sealant do seem to be an essential part of the process plus a staple gun to hold them in place.. done properly it all looks pretty easy..

if you have fitted new rubbers minus the pre applied tape sealant i think you have made a mistake.. i never would.. but i could be wrong.. he he

trog

ps.. with a vertical window the rubber dosnt have to do much of a job.. with angle ones it does else the water runs straight in as opposed to down and away.. just my thoughts on the subject for whatever they are worth.. :)

Could you not contact the maker of your caravan and ask them what material they use some manufacturers are very helpful or a caravan dealer that has an approved workshop should know as they often have to replace caravan windows

Hi Trog100

I dont want it for window rubber .... I already did all 3 front ones.
See above posts from ME .

Re asking a caravan repairer ...I am hoping one will see this thread and answer the question.
Even a good guess would be fine

Having said that.I am sure some of the very good points made here in this thread will be useful to many . I do appreciate all those putting their 2 penny worth in.

Hi Camcroft

The caravanmanufacturer is NO LONGER in business , like too many, gone by the wayside.
I did contact thee rubber supplier ( as I have just fitted 3 to 3 windows )
See MY above posts.
1/ The supplier does not manufacture the rubber
2/ as most things , its now made in China
3/ Even so-called UK manufacturers are in most cases having their suff made in China. Often even the Chinese manufacturer does not know who makes the mastic or even the mastic being applied here in the UK.
4/ Current caravan makers will NOT say who makes their rubbers as it is Commercially sensitive information .
5/ The rubber manufactures will not reveal their suppliers of mastic for the same reason in 4 above.
6/ A major caravan business near Dewsbury only supplies the exact same rubbers that are fitted to thee caravans they are selling ( traceability ) they dont sell rubbers sources from elsewhere . Hence their high price per meter and I see and understand why .
If someone phoned me ( I make pilot/ co pilot intercom systems for aircraft ) and asked who supplies my microphone inserts there is no way I would tell them.   However it would NOT be unreasonable for ME to try and find out who supplies my competitors ... thats Business !

I probably wont get a definative answer and I knew this but it was worth the try.

i todays world its almost impossible to find out who exactly makes what.. where china is concerned it is impossible.. even if an answer is given its likely to be one made up on the spot or a wrong answer..

when ask a question no "expert" likes to say they havnt a clue.. tis a weakness they have.. he he

mind you asking for tape type mastic in a tube struck me as a strange (maybe even daft) question with no possible answer right at the beginning of the thread.. he he

Can we ask you why you need to know who made & what is in the sealant,I think you will find so many brands of sealant and that they do exactly the same job as one another.

I believe Leisureshop Direct sell the seals with the substance pre-loaded. They might be able to advise if you speak to their technical people. You really are struggling to get the definitive answer.

Hello ALL .Thanks for your contributions to this Thread.

The mastic laid into the NEW rubbers is in almost every case a commercial Mastic manufactured by Sika iof Switzerland.
www.sika.com

Its not the same as that on a tube and nt the same as that on a backing roll.
YES it is very very similar but it is supplied to the rubber manufacturer in much larger quanitities to use in commerrcial insertion machines. The consitancy being adjusted in order for it to pass through the machine.

The end result being that , once applied into the rubber ( the rubber having being prepaired for the mastic) it looks and performs the same as that on a tape .
It could be that the rubber is pre-treated just before the application by either a solution of something else being laid in ( cleaning ?) ..or.. pre-heating - or post - exposure to , something like UV or other for to make it stiffen / set a little ready for storage/ packaging.

Anyway ... its SIKA ( not available retail as its only supplied BULK to manufacturers )

My source - ex employee - via ham radio
