Is it safe to unscrew the locking handle to replace with a new one as the covering on the exsisting ones plastic handle has broken. Off. Still works but have to use a cloth when tightening an loosening .

Make sure at least the front legs are down and supporting the van and simply unscrew the handle all the way.

Brianphillips, as long as the new thread matched and the front 2 legs are down carry on regardless.

Failing that just use electrical tape on the handle to pad it up a bit.

Just had the same problem on mine. New handle was about £7 direct from the Al-Ko website.
The old one was quite difficult to remove because the end of the thread seemed to be damaged.
Once out the new one simply screwed straight into place.

They flatten the end to stop it falling out if it ever unwinds itself, and they do, I know!
It can be easier to wind it in and cut the last 10mm off or grind it down with a dremel or similar.
