Hello all

I'm in the process of removing the manky carpet that my caravan came with

I'm not sure whether or not it would be worth sealing the floor boarding before fitting the new carpet? I wasn't sure if it would be better to leave the floor as is, does it need to breath?

Any advice?

Hi Mark, I don't think 'sealing' the floor from inside would accomplish much. Usually the floor is a sandwich made from 2 sheets of marine ply with polystyrene foam between, I don't think it needs anyting extra on it.

the floor should already provide a level of protection from beneath. the bottom layer of ply will be heavily treated and the middle layer of foam protects any water from rising if it were to get through the bottom layer of ply.

i would imagine that if you did spill water / liquid there would be more of a risk of the water becoming trapped between the two layers of ply if the top layer was sealed. sealing would promote this

i think wood becomes much more damaged it the water cant escape / dry. personally i wouldnt clue / nail / staple the new carpet down. that way if anything is spilt the carpet area can be lifted and dried more easily and you can keep an eye out for signs of water ingress on the floor by lifting the corners now and again. You could try office carpet squares from B and M. £2 a square and if damaged throw it away. attach with double sided sticky

The new carpet is in now and looks really good, I didn't realise how worn/dirty the old one was

I didn't treat the floor. Theres no sign at all of damp, its a very sound 30 year old van

I've rewired the 230v and checked the 12v, I popped a new water pump in and the pressure is excellent

I've got a few more checks to do and I'm going to get the gas system checked then, other than a good clean and wax, she is ready to go

Just got to wait for my new car to be built and then its holiday time
