Hi,

Im completing a damp repair and the simplest part of the repair is causing trouble!

Im trying to wall paper Bailey Flax wall paper to a piece of ply and it will not stick.

Ive tried three times now, each time the glue does not seem to go off and i can very lightly pull on it and it just comes off. Im using Solvite wall paper adhesive, ive also sealed it with PVA..... what am I doing wrong!?

The wall paper paste just doesnt seem to go off properly, im wondering if it cant get absorbed properly.

I will be getting a spray glue tonight and using that, aagghhhhh!?

Any suggestions would be great, Thanks alot Matada

HI, it looks to me that the atmostphere in your van is to damp. I suggest heating the van to above 12c. After pasting the paper let it soak for about 5 mins, then apply.

Maybe the paste is to thick, try it a bit thinner. I have a bailey which had damp, fitted new wallaboards & wallpapered with no problems.

If you have coated the board with PVA, had a quick look and it seems they recommend an acrylic primer not PVA for best results.

How long ago did you use the PVA? Have you keyed it with sandpaper? Did you use it neat or water it down?

Paste too wet? How warm is it in the house? Is the paste a thick consistency?

EDIT: Is it marine ply or exterior ply?

Hi,

The ply is just an exterior 3.6mm ply from B n Q.
The PVA is bostick wood glue watered down, I hadnt keyed it or sanded it down.
The paste was a thick'ish consistency as I would normally wall paper at home.
The house is 18-20 degrees usually.

The odd thing is its barely sticking at all!

And an interesting response from Bailey!

Thank you for your email.

After discussing your query with engineers in our Retailer Services team, we can advise that we are unfortunately not aware of any adhesives on the market that will assist you due to the plasticizer contained in the flax wallpaper.

For your information, we received our panels from a supplier who we understand used a very heavy duty industrial press and an unknown adhesive to adhere flax wallpaper to plywood panels.

I understand from talking with Millie in our Parts Direct team that they can supply replacement wallboard panels with flax wallpaper already attached but this item would need to be ordered through a local Bailey approved retailer or a Bailey approved service centre and you can identify these via this link to our online search facility:

http://www.baileyofbristol.co.uk/choose-your-retailer/

I trust this response has been helpful for clarification.

Kind regards

Considering the response from Bailey you will have to use a plasticiser resitant adhesive.

Seems that marine ply is the one to use. There are issues with exterior ply.

Try this...

Especially Vinyl wallpaper.

You may need a liner though.

The paper has a plastic/vinyl feel to it, enough to allow me to run it under a tap and clean the wall paper paste off!

The outcome was to use spray adhesive, its stuck on very well and I doubt it will ever move!

Hopefully this weekend I can glue the wood in place in the van and fit the new window seal.

Are there any recommendations for fitting new window seals?

Thanks again everyone

Make sure you get the window seal that already has the mastic on it it's a lot easier and cleaner to use.
Put the joint under the bottom window catch.

Yep, I need to do the seal one evening this week. Is it ok to just push the seal on or does the side with the mastic on need to be pulled over the outer skin so it sticks flat (if that makes sense). I was thinking the mastic would all push up the seal if its just pushed on

Your correct about the seal you have to bend back the seal to open it up and push it around the opening paying attention it fits in the corners properly.
Putting the join under one of the bottom catches.

OK, the joint was originally in the middle at the bottom, not near any catch. There were two staples securing the ends.

You need to staple every couple of inches all around the seal knock them Down with a small hammer it helps when fitting the plastic seal putting the join under the catch helps if the seal shrinks a little

ok, thanks for the advice.

I read and was told to make sure the seal is fitted and a few mm extra was pushed in at the two ends, also to put the join in the middle, also... someone somewhere told me to glue the two ends together!
