Put the join in the middle if you prefer.
Glueing the ends is good idea but not essential.
The grey insert should be overlapped.

It tends to shrink quite a bit so overlapping it is the best thing to do.

Think this is an old post but you should paste the ply with PVA glue to seal it first or the ply boards are just gonna keep wicking up the paste
Raw wood absorbs everything so PVA it to seal it
