Hi everyone. I have to do a big repair job on my compass connoisseur 524 for water ingress. I'm just wondering what's the basic construction of a caravan wall? Is it, the outside aluminium wall, then glue polystyrene to the aluminium, in between the sheets of polystyrene you have lengths of pine which are also glued?, then you have a sheet of plywood or wallboard glued to the inside?

Any advice please. Thanks.

Andrew

You have got it right aluminium, polystyrene, wall board with yes structural battons in certain places.
If taking the polystyrene off be careful as the aluminium outside wall is fairly thin and damage can be caused.
I did a side of our old van but found that by removing the wet wood the polystyrene dried out although it did take some time and patience.

Thanks Oldeldiss.
I'm a little out of my depth with this repair but has to be done.

You are not out of your depth.
Honestly my other half kept coming home to more of the inside of the caravan on the drive, he was incredibly worried and thought that I was destroying the van, however once you start to delve into it all it becomes clear what you need to do to make it right, a friend of ours has done some damp repairs too, he was confident that if I could do it then so could he and both vans looked beautiful afterwards.
The one very Important thing to think about is where the water is coming in and stopping it.
