I bought a caravan and new it had severe damp from a break in the grp panel on the back edge of the roof. Today I decided to remove the joining strip on the roof and rear section of awning rail. The culprit piece of grp that is broken has been fixed badly with glue. Anyway I took said piece off and the roof rail is completely rotten. I have lifted back the ally roof sheet slightly and scraped the rot out. My intention on Sunday is to fill the wood gap with expanding foam approx 6 inches long.Refix the small grp piece and reseal rail and joining piece and monitor through the season before takling the interior. Has anyone used expanding foam before? It might be just temporary and renew wood from inside after everything is dry.
Some have tried expanding builders type foam in spongy floor fixes instead of using the recognised one-shot or two-shot proprietory materials, probably due to cost but it can have it's problems.
I don't think it has the same inherant strength but more importantly it is quite an aggressive foam mixture when released and needs careful use or it will bulge out the area being worked on or be forced into areas were it was not intended to go into.
