I have taken off a section of the awning rail to clean and reseal. It also has a plastic strip underneath. It's old and hasn't kept its shape. Does this need to go back on or can you put the rail on without it?

I would say that you should try and get a new replacement. Try this link to Sealsdirect. I would not put the rail back on on it's own, the plastic strip performs an aditional seal against an uneven surface. Trust me, you cannot have too much sealing against water ingress on any caravan.
