we have just bought a 2004 elddis xscape . We wanted to try the water pump ,fridge, heating etc. We have the caravan on our drive at the moment when we turned on the power it tripped out the household electric and the caravan trip. We have replaced the mains hook up adaptor and checked both ends of hook up lead but still blows . Any ideas please .

I suspect you have a faulty appliance in the van just follow the steps below in the order as written.
You need to carry out your investigation step by step,Plug in your Hookup cable to your house before you connect to the van ,if it doesn't trip the house RCD then the cable is OK if it trips you have a faulty cable.
If OK then open all the switches in the van and connect the hookup cable,if OK then close the RCD if it stays closed systematically close the MCBs one at a time to check if you have a faulty circuit which is tripping the RCD,if it trips isolate all equipment on the faulty circuit,fridge/cooker etc and unplug all portable appliances, close the MCB and if it stays closed reconnect each item individually till the RCD trips to identify the source of the fault.

I would make sure everything is switched off in the caravan before you connect to mains power. Then switch each appliance on one at at time and see if you can figure out what is causing the problem. I had a similar problem a while back and discovered that the element in the water heater needed replacing. Hope this is of some help.

Francis

oh dear, anything to do with fridges is expensive. If you are competent my first look would be to see if the heating element has shorted to earth by disconnecting it.

It is very easy to check if the element is shorting to earth if you have a multimeter.
If it has a plug fitted just test on the Ohms range between the live and earth and the neutral and earth.
The cheapest option would be to disconnect it from the mains and run it on gas.
