The extractor fan on our Monarch needs replacing, is it a job that a very competitive DIYer could do. Your help would be gratefully received. Thanks xxx

Does it really need replacing? See www.leisureshopdirect for exploded views and spare parts.
Otherwise it is a relatively simple job but you need to be able to access the exterior to remove all the old sealant.

Thanks for your reply. The fan is ok but the hinge on the outer cover disintegrated so we assume we have got to replace all of the framework. Basically the inside bit is fine but the outer part was found in the caravan storage compound!

I replaced mine a couple of months ago and the most difficult job is as already mentioned by DaveS1, cleaning the old manky gunk sealant off. I used the roll mastic when fitting the new one.

I had gradually repaired and replaced bits on mine over the years but due to just about every part of it having issues, mostly caused by UV light degredation, I decided it finally had to go.

To be honest, I was looking to replace it with a Maxxfan Deluxe but at 300 quid it was good but expensive. However, some kind soul was selling one on a site like Preloved or Gumtree, still in it's box for around a hundred quid so I bought this new, (second-Hand) Omnivent. So far it has been much better than my old one ever was.

Dave.

Your reply was very helpful, Dave, thank you. Is the roll mastic easy to get hold of?

yes Lin, very easy. The one I had was W4 mastic sealing strip, (just Google it), it comes in various widths and colours. Link is here.

Has anyone replaced the outer done on a Thule vent skylight? Mine has gone brittle and cracked. I've sourced the replacement but wondered if there was any "issues" to consider.

Hi and welcome to the forum. I don’t know for certain but I think you will find they are all of a similar nature, only the mechanisms may vary a little but function the same.

Just take care when removing the old gunk that is sealing it to the roof, try not to scratch the paintwork and if there is power to a fan, make sure it’s disconnected. Clean/soften the sealant with white spirit but clean the white residue it leaves with meths to give a nice clean finish for the new sealant. I found roll mastic easy to use, it comes in different widths and can easily be cut to fit exactly. Slightly overlay the sealant at the joins so no holes or voids. Good luck.

Dave.

Hi again and thank you for your welcome. I'm not intending to replace the entire unit just the roof top outer "cover". It looks quite straight forward but particularly wondered if the hinge screws needed removing or whether these just secured the main inner part of the unit.

We had Road Pro fit a MaxxAir fan to our motorhome, its a bit more versatile than regular fans. We find it very good.

I'm not sure on your make of vent but usually the hinge will need dismantling, be it screws or a pin as it is where it is connected to the fixed base. There is usually another hinged fixing to the mechanism that raises and lowers the top. Good luck.
