Just had a frightening incident. Alarm sounding in the caravan and on checking found a dreadful smell. Took me a few moments before I realised what was happening. Yes the battery was rapidly approaching boiling point. However, I was in time to shut off the power and save it from exploding.

The question now, was this just the 5 year old battery at fault or the charger. I will try to check the charger output tomorrow, but if this does not look good, then I will seek to replace the psu.

It is from a 2017 Coachman caravan, a PS276-1-BCSM unit. I gather these can be problematic and have come across a company called APUJACK who claim to make an improved and upgraded version of this.

I would welcome any comments on this topic and has anyone tried an alternative replacement for this psu?

it takes a lot to make a battery explode.. something like a massive over-charge i doubt a faulty caravan charger could do this..

check the voltage coming out of the charger and the battery voltage.. maybe try another battery..

Far more likely to be a charger problem than the battery I would have thought. However, having said that it is possible that the faulty charger has now damaged the battery. I don't know anything about that particular charger though.

Just managed to check the charger. It seems to be outputting the 13.8 volts OK. Just a question of does that change when it warms up.

I will have to leave it to run for a while and see.

Just about to order a new battery as the old one is definitely u/s now. But, being a Halfords special and 5 years old, I am not going to complain.

Have you checked the charger without the battery connected up as you will receive a lower reading if the battery is currently under load from the charger?
Checking the two battery terminals independently with a live feed will provide an accurate reading with a voltmeter. It should read about 14 volts which if it's anything less then it proves that the charger is defective. Also check the battery independently too which gives you a positive answer as to which of the two are at fault or both but having a nasty smell from the battery means the the battery has over-gassed which might mean a replacement battery anyway.
My leisure battery is 10 years old and still going strong but I keep it charged 24 hours via a smart charger which helps prevent the battery from sulphating.
