Hi all
In our previous caravan the front support bed slat had at some point been broken and glued - we had no idea until son sat on the bed and it collapsed!! He’s 14 and thin as a rake!
We are really worried about this happening to our new caravan and having searched everywhere for a preventative solution without success I’m hoping you can help.
Surely there is some sort of support leg specifically for this? I know it would need to be removable so the slats would go back in position when using the sofas.
Any solutions anyone?

If the original bed slat had already been damaged and repaired, it's never going to be the same again as there will be a weakness in the slat that wouldn't take any excessive weight to break. Thousands of people have these bed slats without any problems so I think the caravan must have been abused by a previous owner at some point. It sounds like you have become paranoid about this but theoretically the bed slats don't require any extra support if they are treated with respect.

Had this broken on both ours and our sons caravan.
that is if you mean the front slat that forms the leading edge of the bed.
both vans had a piece of vaneered chip board with a strip screwed on at right angles to help make it rigid and his had already been splinted before.
I replaced both with a piece of spare hardwood flooring with a strip of the same for the front with the polished surface outwards,
So in effect a straight replacement with far superior materials (looks good too) and then re attach the tapes.

Hope this helps

Not hard to make a support leg to go under middle of slat. Use 3 bits of suitable sized wood screwed together in a horizontal vertical horizontal format & slide into position when bed is made up.

You can buy replacement slats of the appropriate lengty and width on-line and they are not too difficult to fit, I had to replace one of mine. Have a look on eBay on this link, they are less than two quid each.

Hi all

It is the leading edge of the bed I'm concerned about - think I may set hubby the task of fitting a supporting leg!

Thanks for all your replies

Ours broke as well. Putting a knee on teh edge of the bed so only supported by that slat did the trick.

If you put your knee further in on the bed and land gently it will be OK.

Now you know it's a weak point, you will be more careful and it won't break again.

A knee could break it and it is also unfortunate that it is the usual place to sit when getting in/out of the bed.
I have seen it done where a thin ish piece of ply is screwed and glued under the slat to laminate and strengthen it to stop it flexing, and it still folded away Ok

At first glance it looks good, but what's the procedure when folding the centre rack away. I take it the three legs (probably one would have been enough) are removable otherwise they would obstruct the front locker. Even if your adaption is removeable that's quite a lump to stow away.

Just 3 legs which screw in and out - very light and not much room taken up at all :)
