Sorry im new to caravaning. I have a older caravan it has a cascade water heater. The green light and red light is on I looked outside and water is pouring out of a square box next to the water pump ot has cascade written on it can anyone help me please??
If the water heater isn't full of water the first thing you must do is switch it off. Once you have sorted out the water coming out, which is probably the drain plug, fill the heater completely until water is flowing freely from the taps. Only then should you try switching it back on.
If you have stopped the water coming out and have tried to fire it up again it sometimes takes a while for the gas to come through so you may have to try a few times. I am presuming that yours is a gas-only cascade heater like ours was. If you have a dual fuelled one have you tried it on mains electric?
If you had the hot water switched on when it was actually pouring out water due to an absent drain plug then you may have burned out the heater element inside. The only thing you can do is fit the drain plug with a new 'O' ring and refill it with water and start from the beginning again and see if it trips the MCB due to a malfunctioned heater element.
Hi no I haven't stopped the leak. I took the front of the cover outside and it pouring out loads from the bottom of the unit not from the drain plug. I looked inside the van and its dry so have no idea
Hi tango. I took the cover off and its not leaking from the drain plug its underneath the unit and not inside the van either. We are having to boil water up for hot water at moment and we have 3 more weeks on this site with no hot Water. What a pain
Strange that it's not inside the van if it's not from the drain plug as 99% of the heater is inside. Last year when I had just arrived on a site I turned on my cascade water heater and went off to the toilet block. Just as I was getting back my wife told me that something had gone bang, and did I hear it? I hadn't but when I looked at our caravan there was water pouring out underneath. I ran inside and took up the seat and saw that my water heater had "exploded". There is a rod that runs through the heater tank and corrosion had caused the rod to snap, probably due to pressure from the heating water. Water from the tank had gone everywhere, including all over my bedding which was in that same locker. We spent half the evening backwards and forwards to the site's tumble dryer drying it out.
As a result of that I have now replaced the Carver Cascade with a new electric water heater as it was £100 cheaper than having the old one repaired.
As Colin21 (above post) has stated, the single rod down the centre is called the tie rod which secures the top of the heater to the stainless steel cylinder. However, at the top of the stainless steel tank (behind the exterior cowl) the tank has a trumpet shaped flange which is where the big 'O' ring seats to retain the water inside the tank. So, the only way the water can escape is either if the tie rod has failed (as in Colin21's case) or the 'O' ring has perished but either way, any water escaping should be flowing out onto the caravan floor.
