Does anyone have experince in France or around Girona with replacing caravan tyres with tryon bands? Years ago we had real trouble trying to help a mechanic in Spain understand Tryon bands as he had no clue what they were. Has the situation changed? We want to leave the caravan in Spain but are worried what happens if a tyre blows.

Might one answer be to remove the Tyron Bands and invest in a TPMS, that way you wouldn't need worry the Tyron's? I assume you also have a spare wheel? Is the caravan going to be used as a static in Spain or are you going to tour. If the former you shouldn't need to worry too much.

Provided tyres are correct load rating & are replaced every 5yrs or so I cannot see a need for Tyron bands. I guess use by caravanners these days is minority. If it might cause probs in Spain then best to have them removed.

There is a tool that you can buy from Tyron for the fitter to remove the tyre from the rim. Store it in the caravan when not being used.

Link to tool here: https://www.gaslowdirect.com/product/tyron-portable-fitting-machine-tr3040/

All the tool does is compress one sidewall down to give access to the wheel well and Tyron band. Can be achieved by other methods if they know what they are trying to get to.

TBF, I've encountered tyre fitters in UK who haven't got a clue what a Tyron band is, so perhaps little chance on the continent of them knowing what it is or how to deal with it.

You should have as a minimum, the 'Customer Care Kit' that came with the bands and should always stay with the van/paperwork. That is a multi-language leaflet and a suitably long Allen key to undo the fastening screw. https://www.tyron.co.uk/tyron-accessories/

Many thanks to all the posts so far. I have seen this portable tool to remove the tyre from the wheel but every where seems to be out of stock at present. Does anyone know where they are available?

Thanks for all the advice. Apparently in this country Kwickfit mobile will come out and change these tyres but no-one in Spain seems to have heard of them. I wonder why they are not promoted in Europe?

Tyron bands are mostly for 4x4 vehicles to allow tyres to be deflated to low pressure to get out of mud. I suppose it might have been worth using them on caravans decades ago when tyres were inclined to blow out due to defects but quality of tyres is far better now & I can see no purpose now for caravan use provided tyres are less than 5 yrs old undamaged correct load rating & correct pressures maintained.

My van came with Tyrons fitted, and it's now time to change the ageing tyres. Having spent a goodly part of today phoning around numerous tyre fitting depots (in UK, and including all the big names!) to try and find one local to my van storage site (in Hertfordshire - so hardly out in the wilds of nowhere!) that can deal with them, and generally being met with "a what!" at the mention of Tyron bands, I think you are in 'Snowflake in Hell' territory in getting anyone abroad to deal with them.

Now pondering taking the things off my wheels and getting TPMS instead!

It does rather look like Kwik Fit mobile service is the only option if you have them in at least my part of UK! And there is a extra £10 per wheel charge for dealing with them over and above whatever service you require, puncture repair, new tyres etc. for the extra time involved.

Can't really agree with Billy, it's not always about quality and poor upkeep, sometimes you just get punctures! And Tyron Bands were heavily marketed at the caravan/trailer market not so many years back, my 2016 van had them fitted from new (not by me though!), and never known any 4x4s with them! Think a TPMS is wise option as an alternative, you wont know much about a deflating trailer tyre until things are quite desperate due to the isolation from tow vehicle.
