Hinge snapped on Battery locker and repair didn’t work so going to replace the box.
My mobile service chap said I should seal it with caravan mastic tape, it comes in different sizes and I don’t know which to get. He is on holiday so I can’t ask him.
Any advice please ?
John
What comes in different sizes. The battery box or the tape?
If it's the battery box then you need to remove it and measure the width, depth and height then you just need to search for an identical battery box of the same dimensions.
Get everything clean, remove the old stuff with white spirit then clean up the white residue it leaves with methylated spirit. Place old stainless steel screws in a pot of white spirit to clean them of old sealant, when clean, place them in some meths and dry them off.
Slightly overlap the joins around the box and cut out little areas to alow the fixing screws to sit inside a hole and not stick to the screws as youn tighten them, otherwise it will grab the mastic and wrap it around the screw threads. It pulls in the mastic and deforms the uniform sealing function that you are after.
If you have some non hardening sealant you can put a blob on the screw hole as an extra 'belt and braces' seal. This is exactly what I did today when replacing my lower awning rail. Good luck John.

Job done, and thanks to everyone, hardest part was removing the box, the sealant had ‘glued’ it to the van.
Then removing old sealant took nearly an hour.
I want to take the lock from my old door and put it on the new door so I can just have one key but the barrel doesnt have an obvious way to remove it??
My guess is that it is a cheap way of retaining the lock so that assembly is just a push fit. I would be looking at some way of gently wedging each retaining clip back, perhaps getting a suitable width of ty-wrap pushed into the groove to lift them level with the shaft?
