Recently the fuse for my Lunar Lexon's battery charger decided to melt. Not the metal, that didn't blow, but the plastic. This consequently melted the plastic fascia to my fusebox. Why does the plastic on a fuse melt but the metal bit, designed to blow, not do that?
Changed the fuse, and the charger (at some expense)...looks like it's doing it again. Plastic melted, but not the metal bit blowing. Took out what's left of this second fuse and all is OK..except I cannot now charge my battery.
Please explain.
Overheating can sometimes be caused by loose connections in the terminals.
Make sure all the connection screws are tightened.
A similar thing happened to a friend of mine but in the house fuse board. Loose connections caused the terminal block to overheat and melt, lucky there was no fire!
Thanks Basa
That sort of makes sense. If the area of contact in a terminal is reduced from what is designed then the flow through that smaller area of contact will increase- with the resistance to that flow providing the heat...??
I'll check those terminals on my next visit
Thanks
Worth checking all the terminals , both the habitation and engine battery as well.
Not sure how old your EHU cable is but the principal is the same when you consider it’s probably rated at 16amp, that’s a lot of current going through it.
If all the terminals cave been checked and are ok you may need a caravan/motorhome electrical engineer to have a look at it.
Safety is of the utmost importance, good luck and please let us know how you get on
