The oven in my old Avondale has had to be replaced. I have bought one from a breakers that should be a shoe-in fit but am having it fitted my someone more proficient than me with gas. My wife doesn't like the colour of the one I've bought but the important thing was to source one that fits. Just wondering has anyone any experience in repainting an oven and if so what heat resistant or stove paint was used and how it was applied. I am told to avoid the colours black or white. Grateful for any comments or advice. Thanks

You got a steady hand then? I think it will look like a repainted oven, myself, with the original colour showing around the controls, oven handle, where you’ve knocked it accidentally, etc (unless you’re stripping the whole thing back before the gas fitter fits it - a good idea to get a professional).
Said my piece. Can’t help with the choice of paint, sorry. Hang a jolly tea towel on the front & make a feature of it. After all, it’s not everyone sources & fits a replacement oven, well done.

Thanks. You may have gathered from my tone the potential repainting isn't high on my list of priorities. I was just testing the water and hoping to learn from the experience of anyone who had done this.

Think that it very much depends on what the original coating was! Can't go look at mine easily as stored 30 miles away! I have a feeling that the top plate (where the hobs are) may be vitreous enamel (as a domestic cooker generally is), don't think a lot of paints would adhere to that very durably! ... and of course they would have to be quite high heat resisting paints up to the task too!

Nearly all the panels of my stove are glass, with only the framework painted, so TBH never paid much attention what the finish is.

Anything but spray painting would likely look awful, might get away with a gloss paint roller to roller paint if sufficiently skilled! - but real risk the roller foam would not be compatible with the solvents in a heat resisting paint!

Thank you Monty 15 it makes perfect sense to take the approach you did. Painting the front framework would be the best method for me. In the distant past I have used rattle cans on body work repairs on a couple of cars I had and in all modesty got a good finish of course preparation was key.

Thank you Marg6. I hadn't thought that powder coating could be heat resistant but having looked on the Internet I now understand it can be. Food for thought. Thanks

I think an oven in a colour you're not keen on is preferable to a painted oven, it will always look like a painted oven. If you have it professionally coated it will probably cost more than you saved.

Beware of fumes coming off if any of the new paint gets heated. We have just bought a brand new caravan and when using oven for the first few times left the caravan door open to get rid of smell .

Thanks for all the replies. I have picked up the replacement cooker (yes its heavy!) and I have had an opportunity to see it as it is rather than a photo. Fortunately my wife now thinks it will look ok. Powder coating would have cost too much so it would have been a self repaint. I asked for anyone with experience of painting an oven. Nobody with experience has replied. Fortunately the only painting needed was to attend to some rust on the metal surround and give it another coat of smooth black hammerite which makes it look a lot better now.
