Hi all as I mentioned in another topic we have alot of damp. We have purchased sikaflex 522 to seal the outside of the caravan but do we need to remove old sealant . What stuff is used to dissolve the old stuff i can't seem to find it. Sorry very new to this so be prepared for my questions but I think this is the best place for help. Thank you Cheryl
yes you need to remove ALL the old sealant, use an old plastic loyalty card as a scraper, and some white spirit. once all off wipe down with meths to remove all traces of grease from the white spirit.
Hi Cheryl, yes, simple white spirit will do the job. Use it fairly liberally so that it gets a chance to soak in and desolve the gundge and then reapply as neccessary. When it's all nice and clean, go over it all with methylated spitit, that will remove the white residue that white spirit leaves and make it spotless for tyhe new stuff to adhere to.

Although I have never been faced with the need to re-seal a caravan, I have sometimes needed to remove old sealant around bath edge for example. But I have never been very keen on white spirit for this because of the residue it leaves.
Personally, I use isopropyl alcohol. It is much more pleasant in use and does not need any other cleaner after use.
