Silly question, but after many years without awnings, we've bought a sun canopy. Is the above product suitable for the awning rail, and does it have other uses, door and window seals for example?
Yes it's ideal, and has a multitude of uses around a caravan, including wiping window/roof vent/door seals to prevent sticking, lock lubrication etc.
A trick with the awning rail, if you don't use a 'protector' strip, is a small 'bottle' brush, just drag it through the channel before lubricating (you don't need to drown it, just a splash will do, the awning bead spreads it) and fitting awning, it dislodges all the crud that seems to accumulate, and makes the lubrication all the more effective. In fact I don't lubricate mine every time, clearing the crud and residual silicon seems to work pretty well.
Only disadvantage of silicon is that it needs VERY vigorous/thorough removal before any paints, adhesives or sealants will stick to treated surfaces. Same would be true of oils, so no advantage in using them, and many are damaging in ways that silicon isn't!
