Afternoon. Does anyone know how to replace the energy loaded spring under the handbrake on a Bailey 2009 caravan.
Mines bent, meaning the handbrake is not holding and allowing the van to run backwards.
Image attached thanks

Main Energy Store / Gas Spring (On the Coupling)If the main tension spring that creates the pulling force on your brake rods is faulty:Step
1: Fully apply the handbrake to release tension on the system. Chock the wheels of the caravan for safety.Step
2: Locate the spring cylinder/energy store (a black plastic or steel tube) located just under or behind the A-frame coupling.Step
3: Remove the retaining pins or circlips that secure the spring pack to the coupling lever and brake rod.Step
4: Slide out the old spring assembly and replace it with the exact matching replacement. Secure it with new clevis pins and circlips.Step
5: Adjustment: After installation, you must test and readjust your caravan's braking cables to ensure proper tension.

It certainly looks bent in the photo, but you do realise that the hand brake, due to the reversing mechanism, normally allows a certain amount of rearward movement after activating the lever before the brake actually holds firm.
It's a little disconcerting when the brake appears not to be functioning!

From the Alko Chassis manual:
"Hand Brake
With the Euro Hand Brake, pull the lever until upright. The caravan is then braked.
IMPORTANT NOTE
Please note that with the handbrake fully applied, the caravan/trailer is able to move backwards by 25 cm until the spring cylinder/gas spring takes effect.

I have a Bailey of similar age and it's important to note what Monty 15 has highlighted regarding roll-back and the setting of the hand brake mechanism, plus you will see the handle move further back as it does so. There is no button as on a lot of models, it relies on the mechanism locking it in place.

However if it rolls back after that, you will need to look at the brake internally and that's not one you can easily do as the one-shot nut needs re-torquing to quite a high figure and only professionals are likely to have a wrench with that capability.

Dave.
