My Carver Cascade GE has been leaking, after a bit of research I thought the most likely issue was the O ring. So after taking it to bits I discover that the O ring seems to be OK, however the gas burner box is totally knackered, plus I damaged the connecting micro copper pipe removing the boiler.
Daft question I know, but as it is a gas/electric boiler, will it still work without gas being connected when I put it all back together?
Ours worked on electric with a corroded gas burner, until something else perished & leaked & that part couldn’t be replaced. That was maybe 15 years ago. So I suggest it’s a temporary workaround until something else goes - this heater hasn’t been made for a while, the parts aren’t available. But there are replacements heaters & we replaced ours as a DIY job (the gas side does need a professional).
This particular heater crops up regularly in the forum, you’ll find other suggestions if you do a search.
Our Carver Cascade water heater disintegrated a few years ago, the central rod corroded through and the whole thing collapsed without warning, spilling water everywhere. I considered having it repaired but I was quoted a price which was considerably more than the cost of a suitable replacement so I went with that option. The new water heater is electric only but as we always go to sites with EHU and most sites have a fixed charge for an "electric pitch" we have saved money by not using gas for water heating.
I installed the new water heater myself and it was very straightforward. It works very well too.
