we have just found a damp patch just below sky light in the van have been told this is not good ( it is only a small patch ) any suggestions on stopping it getting worse any help would be much appreciated happy caravanning to you all regards Anne
Damp can be a problem if left untreated, the sooner you have this looked at the better----if it is as you say a small area, then it is possible it can be dried out and the skylight resealed. I presume your van is no longer under warranty, if so have your local caravan workshop check it out and give you a price to do the job, or, if you have a good diy man on hand then the skylight can easily be removed, dried out and resealed. Have it looked at at ASP
Have a look at my web page and the links on it , it may be of some help . http://hp-h.com/p/wizard41/ , I would have thought it would be fairly straight forward to remove the roof light ( the only difficult bit may be breaking the seal of the old sealant around the roof light , but if it's letting water in the seal is probably weak anyway ) , then dry the area with a fan heater and refit and reseal the roof light . Make sure you use the proper caravan sealant for the job , should be able to get it from any caravan shop . Note you need to remove the old sealant from the roof light area , you can use thinners for this ( just be careful not to soak the area in thinners , and dry the area with a cloth before using a fan heater ).
I agree with wizard on the repair. I have just done the very same job as your about too do.
I firstly removed the outer part of the rooflight it is unscrewed from inside the vent and it will come back in through the skylight on an angle. you will find that the framework is in 2 halfs an inner and an outer, unscrew the frame and the inner frame should fall away easily, the outer frame Will need a little pressure as thats where the sealant is. now clean down the roof of the caravan and the outer frame of all its old sealant.
I then checked the wood frame that the frame sits on and if its damp get it dry and treat with wood hardener.
now its a case of renew the sealant and install the frame in reverse order. I used some mastic on a roll that I had left over from the renovation but you could use a good quality sealant designed for caravans such as seamseal cv.
