Sound like it's faulty to me.  I would suspect it hasn't been serviced regularly, and the sliding part is dry of grease.  One application of grease wouldn't free it.  It might be worth giving it a little time to work in, greasing it again every trip.

Otherwise, a strip down and clean might well do it.

thanks for the reply ! i really havent got a clue how these things work , has anyone got a link to diagram that explains the workings for me , luckily i can turn my hands to most things given the opportunity.

soon as the weather improves ill get in there and see if theres anything obvious .
