Sound like it's faulty to me. I would suspect it hasn't been serviced regularly, and the sliding part is dry of grease. One application of grease wouldn't free it. It might be worth giving it a little time to work in, greasing it again every trip.
Otherwise, a strip down and clean might well do it.
