My flipping gas heater is not igniting. It's a manual ignition which i hate and will just not ignite. There is gas coming through as i can hear it and have cleaned up the igniter a little. The connector has since broken but have temporaly fixed it. Still nothing. The cable may need replacing or cleaned but have no idea of what and how to do it.
Can these be lit another way like a naked flame. The heater seemed to be totally covered so it looks like the igniter is the only way.
HELP.
Cheers

Or you can have a look on www.preloved.co.uk click on forums then caravans, Gary often answer`s questions on there then have a look back to find any thread on Carver problems
First none of these type 'roomed sealed' fires can be lit with a naked flame...at least not safely anyway.
The 'Piezo' ignitor on this one could well be on the way out but as you have had the fire front off I wonder have you made sure the spring which earths the fire front is re-connected or it won't spark! You will find the spring which is a short length of wire attached to the base plate next to the gas valve, this completes the circuit from the piezo earth strap through the fire front to the main body of the heat exchanger.
All you have to do is make sure it touches the fire front when clipped into position. The piezo earth strap which is a thin strip of brass must also contact the metal of the fire front under the plastic rim of the piezo.
thanks for that but not quite sure what you mean by the spring on the base plate. I am probably being a right thicko here. What does the gas valve look like too, i have no idea. I know the very basics. i have made sure that the earth strap is attached to the front panel but the rest seems ok. On the ignotion there is a metal bit that sticks out the side but not very far only about 1/2 a mm. there is occasinaly a spark from this. It's connected at the bottom obviously with the wire that goes into the fire.
Sorry if that was really confusing.

I'm a registered CORGI engineer and I dont have the certification that lets me work on caravans. I regularly worked on caravan sites years ago in Norfolk before the current regulations existed, but even with this experience it is illegal for me to do the work. If you don't know what you're doing with gas, for goodness sake get someone who does.
Don't worry about asking for clarity, doing it allday it seems obvious to me but of course not to you.
The gas valve is what your control rod plugs into near the floor and the spring wire is fasterned to the base plate at the side of it. The bit about 1/2mm is the earth connection strap and should make good contact with the fire front as you press the piezo, inturn the front has to make good contact with the fire itself and this is where the spring comes in. It's not a coil spring just a piece of spring wire about 2ins long with a little eye on the end. I might also say if you have not cleaned all the muck and dust from around the gas valve you won't find it!!!
What I forgot to say is my very first PDF manual for download covers this fire and it has a page on Piezo faults and how to check them out. It does not mention the spring or show it but the picture above part 15 just above the word 'valve' is where it should be. Don't follow the advice in 15.4 that could lead you into problems.
PS, I do agree with the safety issues raised however this is a Piezo problem that can arise simply by removing the fire front. While I consider this very much a DIY problem and particularly because it's not interfering with the gas side, other problems leading on from it such as 15.4 in the Carver supplied manual I do not and hence my warning
I'm a new member to this forum and this post applies to me.
I can see no spark through the the mica window, but i disconnected the piezo, tested it and it works fine.
Mr Arc systems, says the fire front should be in contact with the fire with a piece of wire but can see no evidence of this .
I tryed to upload a pic of the gas valve via photobucket, but no luck as yet, although i did get one on my gallery . Hope this is enough for you to see.
sorry for late reply but as always in January, I'm sunning myself in warmer climes?!
Your picture though shows the earth wire blurred in the forground, also it attached to the fire. So first and on the SPL3002 version, check the other end is attached to the metal of the fire front, or, on the 3000/3000S, direct to a washer under the pressed steel nut holding the piezo.
Overall, think of the piezo as a battery, it needs two connections, the positive in your case being the red wire in the photo, but it also needs a negative earth return to complete the circuit.
Also, electric is lazy, if via poor insulation of the red wire, there is an easier route to earth passing near metal than the spark gap over the burner, it will take that shorter route. Moving the red wire then, just a little, to increase the shorts gap will often restore the spark to it's correct place.
I'm new to the motorhome scene and just bought our first one. The Carver 3000s heater is not igniting, theres a spark but no flame how to I check to see if gas is going though?
