Hi everyone. We recently purchased the above said van which appears to be free of damp............till you go into the toilet area ! There is no window in this room but starting from around the wheel arch to about 14-14 inches up the dreaded sponginess is there. Now we have removed the van from the wet grass storage field and it is currently in storage inside at my uncles farm in a huge shed.As i say it just appears to be around this area and there is nothing from the skylight. Is this an easy panel to replace as nothing hangs on it,and i should think the spray is coming from the road through a hole for a guess. Also the awning rail is on the opposite side so it cant be that.
Thanks all
Stuart
Usually, damp gets in to a caravan via one of the rails then works it's way down through the insulation and the evidence as you have spotted is the soft boarding below, if there is not a window or rail anywhere above the damp patch then as you say the water must be getting in through a hole somewhere around the wheel arch area. If it were me i would find and seal the 'hole' then tackle the boarding on the inside. Such a small area of damp should be straight forward enough to repair, but more often than not the damp patch that we think looks small and simple to repair can turn out to be a lot more work than we planned! Removal of the soft boarding will reveal the extent of the problem.
But never fear, there are many members of this site who have tackled allsorts of damp problems and are happy to lend advice should you need it!
Feel free to click on our damp project below, you will find other links to the 'fixed-it-club' members projects there too!
Thanks for the link. Whilst on my travels as a trucker today I found an awesome van shop at Woodmansey calle O Leary motorhomes I think ! What that couple didnt have in the shop isnt made as people were coming for gear left right and centre. My hopes for this project were raised when as I was approaching the shop the owner was showing customers samples of 8 x 4 ft wallboard at the princely some of £14 a sheet !!! The strong glue to fix it to the frame is a collosal!!! £3.50 so apart from the man hours and polystyrene I should be looking at less than a £tonne for the job.
Yes O'leary's are very well respected by some members of the fixed-it-club, and from experience their mastic-on-a-roll is the cheapest you'll find anywhere!!
I would say for your small project you will get plenty of change from £50! Our project, which as you can see on the link above cost us around £50 in total, so yours should be a fair bit cheaper i'd say!
Hi again...Im just wondering how easy the cupboards and bed areas are going to be to remove them.My thinkin is as the damp is patchy behind the seats right at the bottom was to just remove the paper up to the seating area. Also on inspecting the main area of concern ive notice a vent just above the damp patch which is probably the culprit,
Hi Stuart , the bed/seating units are easy to remove and the cupboards are straight forward too , have a look at my web page it should give you some interesting info http://hp-h.com/p/wizard41/
