Im looking at getting an awning for may van for next year, but the awning rail on my van is damaged in places,
how easy is it to repair (presumably a lot of patiance and a small hammer) and are one of the awning repair tools, such as towsure sell worth getting for the job,
the damage is from where the van has had a small argument with somthing, so is distorted, I dont really want to remove the rail as its watertight, and if that bit aint broke, dont fix it!!
Hi if its water tight as you say i would buy that former/tool from towsure tap it around carefully and you should be fine ! try the awning/ spray a little silacon spray on the awning rail helps it to slide and away you go!! if its badly damaged then you may have to replace /part or all of the rail if you do then use the mastic on the roll and seal each side of the repair with arcrilkic sealer not silicon as this peels off after awhile good luck with it and happy camping !! Paul
I would try the repair tool first, if you can get it so the awning will run through and not snag or rip then being a little out of shape is fine. you can get replacment rails from most dealers but they quite expensive.
Hi cheers for the info, and btw, micheal thats the tool i was looking at, does anyone know if a local van place is likly to sell them?? I havent got the awning yet (ive just enquired about a couple and put a wanted on the board) if I find its not repairable, my van is pretty symetrical, i might nick the peice from the front at the other side, and swap them over, I dont want to spent a fortune on the van as its getting on quite a bit
Hi Tim be warned on swaping over understand what you are saying about not wanting to spend money on it !! but what you are going to find is that the screws will not come out because they will have rusted away !! and you may cause yourself a lot more probs then the worth of it !! you will have to redrill the rail to pick up solid points to screw into etc been there mate and it can be a lot of work!! i would get the awning first (or borrow one and do a test run and see how bad it is for getting the awning to slide through ! you can use a pliers/screwdriver to prise the rail to suit etc or one of those formers !! ) well hope you get there mate Paul
