Hope someone can help here? Just bought a new (to us anyway) V70 D5 that has a detachable towbar and a 13 pin electric socket. Caravan has 2x7 pin ones, can I get the van changed or is it better/cheaper to get an adaptor? I am not sure if the towball might be a problem also as I have a alko hitch on the van and this is a Volvo brand towball (I think it will be ok once I take all the grease off from the last person as the distance from the bumper looks ok!!) Any help or advise would be appreciated. As an after though could I buy a male 13 pin plug and rewire the van myself?

the ball will be ok, if it is a swan neck type, a normal flange type usually get in the way of the alko.

personally i would use an adaptor for the electrics, even if its because it would be easier to sell the van in the future, as lots of cars still use the twin plug system, and there seems to be occasionally problems with the wiring of the 13 pin sockets i beleive.

We are getting an XC 90 soon and plan to fit the caravan with a 13 pin plug.  We are also going to get a socket and some cable and using the existing  2 x 7 pin plugs make an adaptor lead in case the van has to be towed by a vehicle with the 2 x 7 sockets.   We will replace the 2 x 7 pin plugs before we sell.

Ideally we would like to replace the 2 cables with 1  13 core cable, but it seems the correct stuff is impossible to get in the UK at present.  When we are in Holland/Germany in July we are going to try and get some.

Nearly forgot....if you have the Volvo/Brink detatchable towbar it is ideal for the Alko hitch.   That is the one we have at present.

There is interesting stuff about the wiring on both the Volvo Owners  and the Swift Owners websites.

--you can buy adaptors 13pin to 2-7 pins at any caravan shop--cant see much point in changing your caravan lead--

Extra plugs/sockets = more chances for problems.     And one plug = much neater solution.   And it is cheaper.   So 3 good reasons!
