Hi all,

I recently purchased a Coleman Cobra 3 and have seen some posts on here where people have made homemade footprints for it. Is this easy to do, and if so what size tarp did you use? All advice welcome. Thanks.

dead easy to do, just go and get your tent out and measure the current groundsheet, take off about 3 inches from the measurements and then go to b&q and buy a tarp to fit that size, get 6 eyelets and place on the groundsheet where you would peg it down, making sure to turn the edges over to give a bit of added strength, then when you put the tent on it make sure that none of the footprint is showing as this would collect water

Thanks for that at marg6. Are the eyelets easy to fix? I read that some people extended the footprint into the porch areas, though I'm thinking that would let the water run under the tent as you mentioned.

you need to get the tool for doing the eyelets, but not hard to do. just one thing to watch out for though is the weight, seeing as this tent is for backpacking i pressume that is how your going to be using it?

I made a footprint and never used it.
The Cobra 3 ls now at my daughter's in Canada and I found it was tough enough not to need a footprint.
I didn't bother extending into the porch and made sure it wasn't overlapping. I put the inner on an old nylon tarp and went round it with chalk and th my measured in a few CMS.

Yes, mainly backpacking, so weight is a factor.

We used it once on a backpacking trip for two people. Great space but too heavy at 2.9kg. I also have the cobra 2 but it is more a 1.5 than a 2 and is also heavy.
My current 2 man is 1.2 kg and it fits two people with room to spare.

That's really light. What model is that? Thanks for all the responses - much appreciated.

It is a Durston x-mid 2 solid. Imported from Canada/US.

The Cobras are excellent tents and bombproof which is why I kept the Cobra 2 and was confident enough to pass the 3 onto my daughter. If we were 20 years younger the weight wouldn't bother us as we like having two entrances and a porch each. You can also sit up in the Cobra 3.
As it is I can now use the Durston for myself or with my wife and if we go together we are splitting the weight so only 600 or so grammes. We still get two porches and better head height. I'm currently slashing as much pack weight as is comfortable due to some wee health problems so this is the main reason for avoiding heavier tents.

Oh yeah, check out the reviews on the Cobra in the tent review section. Mine was the one that looks salmon pink on the photos. It was more a tan colour and was the pro version though I didn't see any real differences. You can just see the tarp footprint sticking out in the porch. IfmIbwas going to make a footprint again, Is use a sheet of Tyvek. Very lightweight but strong.
Also my review seems to have disappeared but the photos are still there.....

I read something about the pro versiona though can't find any details online. Were they discontinued?
