Don't know if I should be asking this. BUT. Does anyone know who actually makes Hi Gear tents.
I'm looking to sell our vango Colorado 800 dlx and buy the Hi Gear corado 6 to use on longer stays. We have the Icarus 500 with enclosed canopy for weekends. We saw the corado yesterday at GO and it looks quite a substantial tent.

I figured that tentz. Hi gear seem to look and feel like another well known manufacturer. Just wondered if they came out if the same factory and simply re-badged ?

I think it's a grt tent saz. It was a toss up between the outsell Montana and the corado. With £150 difference we could the whole corado package for near enough the price of the outwell.
Ok the quality may not be the same but it's only going to be used for a couple of yrs while the baby is still toddling about. We can go back to the Icarus after that.

It did used to be Gelert, not sure now though. Still seem decent enough though, I have a Gelert and a Hi Gear and so far I would say the quality still seems similar.

Everything has been said before, but since nobody ever listens we have to keep going back and saying it all over again and again and again
Not 100 % sure but I had the idea that HiGear was built with rice designed by Go Outdoors. I once spoke to a guy who was the tent designer for Go , so I guess it was his pencil that first drew your plan.
I cant help though looking at other less popular brands , Royal, and noting the similarities in design features with several well known names. So is there a chance that the orient creates basic menu characteristics and these are assembled into whomever's specific style. Thus all built in much the same factories on a buy time basis. The final product would perhaps only be characterised by the budget allowed for by the brand.
We have the Corado 6 and it is a great tent. Not sure who makes them now. I heard that Go had found a new supplier after Gelert got into difficulties last year. The Corado is a very well made tent and stands up to bad weather brilliantly.

It's looks very sturdy Tony. Had a good look at GO yesterday. Love our Icarus but the OH thinks it's going to come tumbling down in the highland winds lol

It is a very sturdy tent Dave. It does stand up well in the wind. Steel poles make a difference. We had an Icarus and have just changed it for a Calisto 500 because it has metal poles.

just to clarify - Gelert did source and develop Hi-Gear for us in the begining. And models such as the Lakesbury, Ottawa, Atlantis, Horizon & Meridian became our Mojave, Gobi, Rock, Zenobia & Kalahari.
In an effort to dispel a view `myths`:
* They are not de-spec`d models
* They are made in the same factory on the same machines by the same people (the factory in question makes tents for several well known brands also)
* They are made from the same materials
in fact the main differences are the colour, what water proof repelency is added (hydro-static head) & the price!
The advantages of buying in bulk means we get a better cost price - so in turn the better selling price is passed on to the consumer.
Hi-Gear is now sourced, designed & developed by GO in house. Models such as Corado`s and Voyager`s are our design.
before my move back in to store management i was the tent buyer for 2 years - and was lucky enough to visit the factories that we use and visit the product launches of Vango, Outwell, Coleman etc so I have a little insider knowledge so to speak.
Going back to the original poster - the Corado is a great tent (4 berth, 6 berth or 8 berth) Its very sturdy and will take quite a beating in the wind. The living space is good on all models and they are relatively easy to pitch (have a look on youtube)
I own a Hi-Gear tent and me and my family camp many times through the summer each year (I have posted a review and pics of my Voyager 6 & porch in action) and its performed brilliantly!
I`m a regular on here either reading or posting and I`m very happy to assist anyone with queries where I can, and have done so many times.
hope this helps
thanks
