Hi from a new forum member

It looks like I'm about to get my hands on a 2011 Holtkamper Utopia XL at an absolute bargain price. I have seen a review of the smaller version on here, but I was wondering if anyone has experience of the XL and can answer my questions before I commit?

I'm a bit worried it may be a too big for us. Weight and transport isn't a problem as I have a camper van I can chuck it in (it is for my two teenage/tweenage kids to sleep and hang out in). I'll be putting it up on my own (with help from the kids), and we will be using it for long weekends, longer camping holidays and festivals (we always stay in the disabled areas at festivals as my son is registered disabled so usually have some more space and can drive the camper straight in).

They are such things of beauty, I really hope I can make it work. My other option is a Cabanon vis a vis delux which I've expressed interest in, and luckily they are not in a hurry to sell right now.

Hi and welcome to the forum!

I'm not familiar with this tent but with the XM weighing in at 34kg I'd be worried if I was going to have to lug it around unaided - especially if you have to store it upstairs.

Looks as though it has a ton of pegging points, but maybe you don't have to do every peg, every time?

Would the vendor let you try a practice pitch?

Lastly, do you have somewhere you can put it up to dry if you have to pack up wet (more weight)?

Looks like a lovely tent though!

Thanks for your reply, sadly I missed out on this tent so the search continues!

I know! My son is a six footer and both are older kids. They used to be perfectly happy in our little Cabanon Champagne but both insisted last year sleeping right next to each other with just a sheet of material between them was 'euch' and they wouldn't be doing it again

We had Cabanon tents then moved to Holtkamper trailer tent (Astra model).

The improved attention to detail, easy of drying, patent air conditioning and general flexibility, made us wonder why we had ever bothered with Cabanon previously.

Just go for it!

Could it be the difference in price? The Holtkamper is a thing of beauty, at a price most people can only dream of.

Maybe time for pup tents, to give them each their own space?
