Hi all! New member here and I really hope your experience could come in handy...

After approx three years of not camping (COVID, personal situation etc), we have just unpacked our tent to do a dry run as we could be a little rusty!

It went up alright, however there's white chalky residue all over the inside. There was a little on the outside too, but nowhere near enough.

We have wiped it with:

- Dry cloth
- Wet cloth (water)
- Wet cloth (water + white vinegar mixture)

The stains go away when the fabric is "wet", however swiftly return. They are a lot lighter than that they were originally, but this seems to be the lightest they go.

Has anyone got any idea what this is and how to get rid?

Thank you!!

I’d say, don’t worry about it. There are so many components to lining & waterproofing, and you’ve not aired the tent for a while. See what it’s like after a trip away.

It looks like it's degrading. The whole stuff is probably the coating wearing down. I'd pitch it, hose it and see if it's waterproof or not. No more vinegar (why vinegar?).

You haven’t said how old the tent is ?
Its certainly as liddis0 says above probably degradation and I would follow the tips given.
Probably time for a new tent IMHO
