I was thinking of getting one of these instead of a utility tent, mainly for cooking in. Whats the chance of being charged extra for the extension ? I've held off from a utility tent for this reason. I was thinking we could compress it when the bloke came to charge us for the tent, then extend it again when it was time to cook.... (Am I bad?)
As to whether you get charged for the utility tent, that all depends on the campsite; some do, some don't.
I have the Minnesota and am considering the extension not to cook in, as I already have a dayroom/cook tent, but merely so that I can leave the door to the tent open even when it's raining. Now I know that the side entrance is slightly different on the Monty cf the Minny, but the minny's canopy offers virtually no protection to the tent if you wish to leave the door open - unless the rain is falling ABSOLUTELY vertically, with no wind what-so-ever it WILL get the inside of the tent wet. And the front door, which is similar to the Monty, is even worse. It was a pin in the butt having to hurriedly zip and unzip the door to allow people in and out and in and out and in....you get the picture?
Just a thought - if you just want to protect the front of the tent and have the door open in the rain AND you don't have room in the car or trailer for a full extension, have a look at Vango's Adventure Tarp (grey version) at £20. The elasticated side of the tarp is longer than the roof pole of Vango's Columbia 600 (which is similar to the Monty 6). The tarp extends out 2m from the roof pole of the tent and the width of the tarp is wider at its outer extent than the roof pole side. With the pole that comes with the tarp and two king poles from the tent you make a flame proof and 2000HH canopy (not unlike the old one sold for the Monty). Just add longer guys and it only takes a minute or two to put up and take down. Tiny and lightweight (1.3kg).
For some reason tarps haven't taken off in the UK as much as in the US and Europe...

New Extension out this year for Monty 6 with enclosed front looks brill but the cheapest i can find it is £199 the decision now is do i sell my extension and buy the new one or do i buy the new extension and keep the old one and see if it fits on the front of the new extension (tent will be like a mansion then). OH has already given me clearence to buy new extension so could be 1st camping purchase this year.
