To be honest I suspect that you have, indeed, got the much better tent - though since it is nearly twice as expensive it should be. 

I've not yet seen one in the flesh but it strikes me as being a very good tent for the money; and, I know that this will annoy some, but I generally prefer Outwell to Vango.

However, a word of warning.  Although there hasn't been a review of the Oakland XL there has been of the M and there may be an issue with that front fibreglass pole (see here).  So do have a trial pitch or two before you go away on your first camp.

Thanks for all the advice. After a bit more reading and browsing I've gone ahead and ordered the Icarus 600 plus additional groundsheet and carpet. I may get a canopy for it some time but we'll try it out first.

Next I'll need some sleeping bags for the kids and some cooking gear. In the past when it's just been me and the eldest in the wee tent we've just filled it with duvets.

We have a couple of air beds but I've always found them annoying because they seem to soft quite quickly. Maybe I'll ask about bedding in another thread.

Good choice.  But the first time you camp with a lot of rain you'll be ordering the canopy on your return.  I did!
