There are bargains around now, but these tend to be left over tents (end of line) and not the popular models which have been sold out. Still good tents, just not marketted as much, or as well known.
However, if you are not on that tighter budget, or not sure what you are after, I would wait until the new year when there will be quite a few new models out.
If, in the meantime you do see a bargain, post about it and someone usually has one on this forum and can tell you about it.

All,
Thanks for the information, I've got a much better idea of what to look for, therefore in a nutshell :-
1) Go for a quality make (Vango, Outwell, Wynnster etc)
2) Avoid company names you've never heard of RAGE, USAStorm etc
3) Buy from a local retailer if possible, for advice, returns etc
4) No need to spend a fortune
5) Trade the wife in for one that likes camping.
Hopefully she'll never read this, if I never post on this site again you'll know she's read this and I'll be under the patio LOL
Never heard of any of those names, newbie to camping. What is wrong with the Storm and Rage makes, and what is so special about names like Vango and Outwell??

vango are good tents made in glasgow and come witha life time guarantee. outwell are a good name too(i hope they get it right though for next year) both these manufacturers make tnent with SIGs sewn in ground sheets to keep bugs out ect.there a neighbour of mine who is trying to get her husband to sell their vango.iv asked her if i can have first refusal.

Do some searches in this site and you will quickly get to see which tents will last out a bit of hard weather and which will not.
When you compare the quality of the build between good and bad makes - the seams, the material, robustness of the poles etc. - you quickly spot the diferences.
And it is less about the money, there are some low cost tents, from good makes, and there are more expensive tents, from bad makes.
