Hiya all

I'm hankering after a 'proper' canvas bell tent. what do you think? any pro's or con's? am i just having rosy tinted day dreams and should i just stick to my little black tent?

or - is a traditional ridge type canvas tent better than a round one?

and is around £250 fairly reasonable?

thanks in advance for any tips. am just waiting for the nights to warm up a bit then we're off!

We had a canvas 'bell tent' many years ago and it still ranks among my favourites. It was an unused 'ex-army' tent, the canvas was very thick and heavy and there were three pole sections (each three feet long) made from 2" dia. wood, with steel ferrules. If I remember correctly, it was about 12 ft. diameter and about 9 ft. high (with 2 ft. walls). They are very easy & quick to pitch, are extremely stable in wind & rain and warm too...

I don't know what the quality of 'todays' bell tents is like, but there does seem to be a few of them on the market now. Hopefully, they're making a 'comeback' and we'll see more of them on our campsites, because they do look 'how a tent should look'...

A few people have 'posted' over the last year or so, about bell tents and I know some have bought them. Maybe we'll see a few reviews later in the year. I'd love to hear how the 'new' tents perform and might even be tempted myself!...

I love proper canvas tents.  They feel so much more breathable and they look prettiest too.

I've put up lots of different sorts over the years - from little ridge tents like mine, to round pavillions, to big things that are more like circus tents - they're all pretty quick and easy once you know how.
