Hi,And welcome to the site. I think the khyam ontario 6 is a great tent for starters. You can pick it up for less than 160 in some stores......What is your budget?
You might want to be a bit more specific - how many people etc. However the best value tents on the internet in my opinion are the wynnster pheonix (last years model) here:
You may not like the style, size, colour etc. but I am convinced they represent the best value tents at the moment, so much so I have bought one myself. I just wish I could put it up (garden not big enough). For £95 or £115 I don't think you will find better.
We were in the same position last year and our Vango venture 500 has been a little treasure. I think they call it something else in some other stores. It's a great starter tent. Sleeps 5, plenty of bedroom space and plenty of living space, enough for table & chairs and toys.
It's so easy to put up, we can put it up in 15mins(inc. pegging). My kids are little so i like the fact I can have the bedroom as one large room, or, you can divide it up if you like.
We paid £84 for ours and I've seen it for £85-£90 on the net. It leaves plenty of budget for the other essentials!

Just had a look at thw Wynnster Pegasus 6 and I'm tempted myself! Especially the deal on the link above. It's around £200-250 on every other website I've had a look at.
I am looking for a larger tent myself at the minute and for that price, well, you can't do better than that can you?
