Just returned from a soggy long weekend at Spiers House campsite, finally managed to get away from work to use my nice new Gelert Vario 4 thats been in its cupboard since last year !
Anyway the gelert V4 comes with two horizontal poles for stability, they go at head height and I guess they are to stop the whole tent concetina -ing when its windy.
My question is does anyone actually use them as all mine seemed to do was drag one end of the tent down ?

Hi, we borrowed a Vario for camping at easter and we used the horisontal poles, ours stayed up really well and was very stable.I loved the tent but OH hated it, he likes the dome types with pods, hence we bought a Royal Montpelier 12.

Why is it always my toothbrush that gets left behind?
I have a Vario 6 and always use the poles as it makes the tent extremely stable especially in high winds, but I don,t understand what you mean when you say it drags one end of the tent down as we,ve never had this problem are you sure you have pitched it correctly.

Hi . Yes the poles are meant to go into the pockets at each end, and they are tied up with the tapes that run along.
The orange booties are the means of tightening/securing the poles length, and this keeps them in the pockets. They have a tightening system inside and you dont remove the orange bootie type thing.
I've only been on 3 camps in my gelert Lokon 5 and have only not fitted the steel poles in when I was feeling lazy one time when there was no wind. I would recommend that they are put in because you never know when the wind is gonna get up.
I think your dragging problem is probably due to not fitting them in correctly.
