I've always stayed in other people's tents so I haven't a clue what to buy. Is there anything I should defo look out for or avoid ??

You mention Rage but I don't think that it has a good press on this site. Click on the SEARCH button above, put in Rage and you will find several entries on that brand. I never bother reading them as I don't have one.
Many will offer suggestions as to good brands from their own experience (Outwell, Vango - I don't really have any complaints about my Coleman). But you also need to identify what it is you need from your tent: number of people (always add one or two to the real figure for the extra space!), sewn in groundsheet (SIG), living area, etc. Give us some details and advice will flow forth.
I'm looking for a 6 berth with a living area and seperate bedrooms. i would prefer a SIG as bugs don't appeal. I am using it for holidays and camping weekends for groups and would like to be able to stand up in the living area. I'm not great at putting up tents so something that is so too difficult to erect would be great. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
outwell hartford xl. i believe £230 at the moment, not difficult to erect and 3 separate bedrooms with sig and large porch for cooking, storage etc. approx 7 foot high in central living area.

Our gelert quebec is a nice tent with SIG and easy to pitch. You can stand up in all of it. It stood up to the really poor June weather as well. Gelert is a good mid range brand.
I would look at various camping websites such as go outdoors to see what tents you like and then use the search facility on this site to see what others think etc. There are so many brands but I would avoid leben and rage.
I have brought both my tents from ebay with no problem but from online shops that have regular stores as well.
I bought my tent on Ebay and I am thrilled with it! Its a Skandika and they are beautiful. Its an Ebay shop, in Germany. P&P to UK is only £14 and coupled with the fact the tents are very reasonably priced, you can get a bargin. We bought a 6 (+9) berth tent (Jasper) for £126 incl P&P. Definately worth a look in my humble opinion! It arrived within a week too.
You need to think abou what you want from the tent and things such as ease of pitching, size, bedroom and living space, light and windows (being stuck in a dark tent with few windows in the rain is not much fun) height, how often and how long you will use it (weekends or weeks) and pitch size.
