Hi again merlin.
also Google (Cleaning and waterproofing nylon and cotton tents)
It is always advisable to clean your tent before re-proofing as the minute bits of dirt can stop the penetration of the waterproofing agent.

Hi
I used Fabsil paint and spray to waterproof my sisters nylon tent a couple of weeks ago. Her tent was leaking badly, she said it was raining inside the tent.
We found the spray was blowing everywhere, the paint you brush on and it goes where you want it.
It seemed to work although we only had light showers in the days after application.
Synthetic tents shouldn`t need reproofing, and especially not after just three years. If a three year old Diablo was leaking that badly, either it`s been out in the sun for about x5 the normal yearly amount or it`s faulty. There`s a slight arguement for giving them a coat of Fabsil after 6 or 7 years when the UV degradation starts to kick in, but frankly at that point I would think it`s time for a new tent, given the cost of Fabsil.
And as I keep saying...cotton tents made from decent quality cotton canvas don`t need waterproofed either, not until the canvas starts to wear thin after 20-30 years or so. And it`s not just a case of doing it "in case"...waterproofing fundamentally alters the waterproofing ability of the cotton fibres so that once you start treating a tent, you have to keep doing it.
I wish I had shares in the company that manufactures Fabsil, that`s all....
With my sisters tent, which wasn't cheap, the storm was three days into a 2 week holiday and it was a case of doing something or going home. She showed me an egg cup that was full of water sitting on her table inside the tent. Her tent is 18months old, made by a well known manufacturer and it hasn't been up lots.
------------- just love the freedom under canvas
